Are you a member of the Clean Plate Club? Time to turn in your membership card!

Before you begin your weekend festivities and join family or friends for meals, we want to share some Clean Plate Club news with you—it’s time to turn in your membership card and get out of the CPC for good! Or, even better, learn to serve up healthy portions and be mindful of how hungry you really are.

Did you know that the average adult woman eats 92% of what’s on her plate?

That’s regardless of how much is on that plate, too! A review published by the International Journal of Obesity shares that shocking percentage and they found that it’s not just women who are doing the over-plating and over-eating. (Men finish about 90% of the food on their plate.) With portion sizes at most restaurants almost double the daily recommendations, it’s important to know how much is on your plate and what’s going in your body.

It’s vital for your long-term health to consume healthy portions, and there’s no better time to keep your plate in check than the pre-holiday season. Make sure you’re filling up on the good stuff, and balance your meals with vegetables, proteins, and healthy starches.

Need a hand plating your plate? Use your own-- literally! You can use your hand as a portion guide to help serve yourself without overeating. Try serving yourself only as much as you want to eat so you won’t stress if you lick your plate clean.
Use hand sizes to help:

Your Palm = approximately a 3 oz. serving of meat
Your First = about the size of a cup of pasta (or other starch)
Your Thumb = roughly half the size of a serving of salad dressing

Start making healthy choices now so you’re not upset when the holiday festivities begin.

If you have a success story, or any tips to ditch the Clean Plate Club, please share with us here on the blog, or on Instagram and Facebook by hashtagging #healthyportions and tagging @PilatesPlatinum.

Get Outside!

This holiday season I was able to spend some time with my family in Vail, Colorado. While away from home, I challenged myself to new exercises in my hotel, bonded with family over a healthy après ski soup, and took advantage of the weather by waking up every day and hitting the slopes!

(I can attest that the endless amount of Spider Kicks, Bungees, and Skater moves in Pilates class helped prepare me for actually skiing DOWN the mountain. For those who haven’t read my blog post titled, “How Pilates is Beneficial for Winter Sports”, I talk about types of Pilates exercises that target the muscle groups used while skiing.)

Skiing and playing in the snow reminded me of how much I enjoy the outdoors. Whether it’s the massive snow-covered Rockies, or the beautiful hiking trails I frequent in Los Angeles, I love to get outside and appreciate the beauty of nature.

As this New Year begins, I’m going to begin something new for the blog, too. Each month I’ll be posting a list of my favorite moments spent in nature! I’m lucky enough to live in an area with an extraordinary amount of beauty just outside my front door and I’m looking forward to sharing my appreciation of it all with you!

January 2014 Get Outside Highlights:

1. The sun was shining bright as I started a day of skiing during my recent visit to Vail.

2. The open hillsides were filled with beautiful, untouched snow during a cross-country ski excursion in Vail. There are 17km of trails in the area just for cross-country skiing! Check out the Vail Nordic Center at www.vailnordiccenter.com for more information if you are heading to CO and want to give it a try!
3. Malibu beaches never disappoint! I took a little break to take this photo while on a run this past month along the Malibu coast.

4. Hiking Franklin Canyon is a great way to fit in a workout AND spend time in nature. This spot is so peaceful and tucked away that you almost forget you’re in the middle of Los Angeles.

Surviving Holiday Eating

The Holidays can seem like an overwhelming time for a lot of reasons.  It can mean more work/stress at work, more parties, more food, financial stress, etc.  Because of all of these overbearing factors that can come along with the holidays it is important to focus in on the positive and the things that can be controlled if simply just thought about beforehand.  The holidays should be more about family, friends, giving, enjoying, laughing and loving...leave your worries elsewhere or even better make them nonexistent.

Today I am sharing some ways in which you can help yourself not overindulge in the holiday parties and eating frenzies.

-It is extremely important to not starve yourself before a big eating event.  Your body shouldn't turn into survival mode due to lack of nutrition because if it does, then any food entering your body will immediately be stored.  Also starving yourself all day will probably lead to you actually consuming more calories by the end of the day than if you ate regular prior to a big eating event and then listened to your body when you are full.

-Think about different ways in which you can create your at home meals, or even dishes you have to bring along more healthy.
      1. Steam or bake instead of Fry or Saute
      2. Look for lower fat ingredients to use instead of those full fat versions (I suggest not picking nonfat because that typically means more sugar is added into the product)
      3. Try cooking sprays instead of oils
      4. Use herbs to add flavor
      5. Check out different methods for baking like replacing oil with applesauce

-Be Careful with the dessert table.  It is okay to have some sweets that we don't typically enjoy day to day.  The holidays are made to be enjoyed.  Just remember and keep in mind that the more sweets you have the more your body will crave them.

-Watch the holiday drinks.  The eggnog is definitely not a low fat beverage.  I watch my consumption to a very small sip-able amount...no drinking eggnog like a glass of milk.  I also like to add a little bit of milk or milk alternative to my eggnog to thin it out a big without losing its flavor.  An amazingly tasting low calorie egg nog on the market right now is Califia Farms Holiday Nog.  Only 50 calories per serving and does not lack the egg nog creaminess it is known for.

-Alcohol can be very fattening too.  There can be added sugary things in the alcohol, so be careful.  Beer can be just as fattening.  Opt for a lighter version of both.

-I believe it is important to partake and enjoy your holidays just don't indulge the whole time.  You may be a few pounds up the day after but just remember your body will adjust and it is probably just water weight.  Better yet, skip the scale, trust yourself, enjoy the holidays, and get on track when you can...oh and don't forget your regular pilates or exercise!
