What is the pH of your drinking water? By: Heather Dorak

Lets talk about water!  Water is the essence of life.  Without water our planet would not exist, nor would any of us!  Not only is it important for us to drink water, but it is important for us to drink good water.  By good, I am referring to water that is clean, full of minerals and measure on the alkaline side of the pH scale.

What is a pH scale?

It isn’t common for your local new reporter to say, “Hey viewers, today’s pH has increased in acidity moving from a 4.2 pH to 3.9.”  However, it is very important to know the pH of the water that surrounds you. Since chemicals in the water can affect pH; pH is an important indicator of water that is changing chemically.  Shifts in pH levels can be dead give always to an increase in pollution.

pH is a measure of how acidic or basic/alkaline water with a numerical range from 0 – 14.  pHs of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base/alkaline, and the number 7 remaining neutral. The U.S. Geological Survey concludes that the US is more acidic as you move in an easterly direction with numbers ranging from 5.3 to 4.3.  The important thing to note here is, regardless, of where you are in the U.S. the water is acidic.

Okay…so are water is acidic.  Generally speaking the word acidic does not resonate well and has strong negative connotations attached to it.  Yes, it absolutely does.  On the very basic level of understanding, now knowing that your drinking water is acidic, does that sound like something you want to put it in your body?  I hope would hope not.  Inflammation comes from and thrives in acidic environments that leads to diseases.  Feeding you body with acidity is essentially feeding your body with diseases.

A lot of the food and drinks we consume are acidic or create acidic environments within our body.  Acidic environments are what disease, cancer, and illnesses thrive on.  It is extremely important to keep our body in a neutral or alkaline environment and not an acidic one.  So how do we achieve this?

An important way to support our bodies with an alkaline environment is to drink water that is rated a 7 or higher on the pH scale.

Many of us turn to bottle water to hydrate.  The wonderful thing about our Earth is that each and every thing on this planet is uniquely itself.  However in the case of bottled water, this statement is true, but a lot of bottled waters are no better for you than the water coming out of your kitchen sink.  It is important to research your water source and see what alternatives there are in your local area! My favorite water is Essentia and I am thrilled to be one of their hydration specialists.  If you have any questions about Essentia or PH water,  find me on Facebook or Twitter.
Information and Facts contributed to Essentia and their documentation I have received as a Water Specialist for Essentia Water.

Secret Morning Ritual

Here’s something you might not know about me: I have a secret morning ritual that helps me stay healthy and feel great every single day. It’s actually not that big of a secret at all, and you can all do it too!

I drink warm lemon water within 20 minutes of waking up.
I know that may not sound like a big deal, but to me, it’s the best way to start my day and the health benefits are amazing! Of course, I often follow my morning drink with an espresso, latte, or green tea, but I really love the way I feel when I begin the day with fresh citrus-y lemon water. Plus, lemons are natural energizers- they hydrate and oxygenate the body so you feel revitalized and refreshed.

Here are some more benefits of drinking lemon water:
-Boosts your immune system! Lemons are high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C fights colds, and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function.

-Balances your body’s pH! Even though lemons are acidic, inside of our body they’re incredibly alkaline.

-Flushes out body toxins and helps with digestion! It stimulates the gastrointestinal tract and is high in minerals and vitamins, which help rid the body of toxins.

-Rejuvenates skin and decreases wrinkles and blemishes! The vitamin C helps with blemishes- it really does amazing wonders for your skin. It also purges toxins from the blood which helps keep the skin clear.

-Excellent for weight loss! Lemons are high in pectic fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings. It’s also been proven that people who have a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.

-Reduces pain and inflammation in joints and knees! Lemon water dissolves uric acid, which relieves joint pain.

-Helps build strong bones in a child (for pregnant and lactating women) due to its high calcium content.

It’s simple- just boil some water, and cut a lemon in half. When the water’s ready, pour it into your favorite mug and squeeze in the juice of half a lemon. Try it for a week and share your results in the comments below!

Are you drinking enough water?

It’s no secret I like to break a sweat every day by taking a dance class, going on a run or a hike, or by burning calories on the megaformer at Pilates Platinum. As an avid exerciser, I’m also an avid water-drinker! The more you exercise, the more important it is to drink liquids. The key is to drink enough water before, during, and after workouts to hydrate your body and get the most out of your workout.
I came across a helpful tool online from a company who knows a ton about hydration: CAMELBAK.  Click on the link below to view CAMELBAK’s Hydration Calculator! You plug in your physical details along with some information about the type of activity, your sweat levels, and the weather conditions, and the Hydration Calculator keeps you on track by telling you how much water your body needs for maximum performance.  Pretty cool!

The site also breaks down how the calculation is made, and teaches you about regular hydration. You can even shop for some interesting utilitarian water bottles to help you stay hydrated in style.

Enjoy … and keep drinking water!

Proteios

First Order of Importance

What is first order of importance?

The title tells you.

Proteios

Also known as Protein.

PROTEIN IS THE FIRST ORDER OF IMPORTANCE!

Proteios is its greek name.

Aside from water, protein is the most abundant molecule found in the human body.  It exists in all cells of the body and is the major structural component for all cells found in the body...especially those lone lean lovely muscles you work so hard at sculpting.  Protein is also in your hair, internal organs and skin, as well as used in cell membranes.

Those of you that participated in the fat flush, should have learned the importance of protein and water.

This is just a friendly reminder to make sure you get in your protein with every meal and drink plenty of water!
