7 smoothie ingredients to fight the holiday bloat

Memorial Day weekend is here, and kicking off the summer with a BBQ is as American as you can get. Who doesn’t love celebrating, but the uncomfortable, bloating feeling afterwards? No thanks. You can keep your “food baby,” as some people lovingly refer, to a stomach too big to be comfortable in those skinny jeans you wore. We’ve found seven ingredients to mix up your smoothie recipes, and help you feel like yourself again in no time.

1. Berries

Who doesn’t love blueberries, strawberries or raspberries? During the summer months, their gorgeous colors can be seen everywhere. Some other great things about berries are their high water content. Did you know they are 85 to 95 percent water? They are also high in fiber, which can help food move through the intestines more quickly and decrease abdominal pressure and bloating. Berries also add bulk to your meal and can help relieve conditions like constipation, which are sometimes the cause of bloating.

Summer also means enjoying some hot weather fruits you’d find while frolicking in Hawaii. Like berries, pineapples are made up of 85 percent water. Pineapples also contain an enzyme called bromelain which can help decrease bloating by encouraging proper digestion and breaking down proteins in the body. While we can’t be in the tropics everyday, the frozen foods section makes grabbing a bag of ready to go pineapple a breeze.

3. Mint

Whether you’re having peppermint, spearmint or basil, you’ll be helping your body fight the bloat. The mint family is great for soothing the digestive tract and dissolving large gas pockets. Who knew such a tiny leaf could make such an impact on our internal organs, well being. Try not to chew all the mint leaves before you add them to your smoothie. If do though, you might be rewarded instead of punished.

4. Bananas.

Bananas are a source prebiotic fiber, which helps to feed good gut bacteria and improve digestion. A study in the journal Anaerobe found women who ate a banana twice daily as a pre-meal snack for 60 days experienced an increase in good bacteria levels and a 50 percent reduction in bloating. The potassium found in bananas counter sodium’s role. With so many grab and go foods, dining out, or having popcorn at the movies, good to know the banana can help us feel better after too much salt.

5. Ginger

Ginger is one of the oldest spices in the world. Although probably best known for its cold and flu treating powers, ginger is also well known for its ability to alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and is commonly used for eliminating intestinal gas and reducing bloating. It contains zingibain, a protein digestive enzyme, and is particularly effective at reducing bloating and gas caused by protein rich foods. Which comes in handy after a weekend of over indulging when you smell a mouth watering burger on the grill.

6. Aloe Vera

When we think of Aloe Vera we think of sunburnt skin after we didn’t reapply our sunscreen, but we can also think of it as an internal cleanser. The soothing effects of aloe and abundant vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients found in this plant, remove toxins and food buildup from the body. It helps your body realign itself after a few days of food cheating. The enzymes help breaking down undigested food, and get you back to feeling like yourself again.

7. Yogurt

We love greek yogurt for it’s high protein properties, but did you know the healthy or “good” bacteria found in yogurt can promote intestinal bacteria balance and reduce excess gas build up in your digestive system. Probiotics or “good bacteria” relieves GI symptoms, such as bloating. A basic in most packed lunches, should also become a basic in your smoothie routine.

Now what to do with these ingredients? Try any of these smoothie recipes whenever you need to feel like yourself again after a weekend of too much indulgence or really any time. Who doesn’t love feeling their best all the time!

Get Outside!

It’s been quite a busy summer for the Pilates Platinum team— we’ve introduced new trainers, created at-home outdoor workouts, gone on vacations packed with outdoor activities, and experienced some wild adventures in the mountains. We’ve even made new friends while rappelling cliffs! The entire team has kept this summer and active one, and we’ve had a blast playing outdoors as much as possible.

Summer’s not officially over… so we hope you’re inspired by today’s post on how we’ve been spending our days (and nights) OUTSIDE. Hopefully you and your family can find a way to enjoy these last few weeks of summer by Getting Outside!

Jump Around! 15 Min. Cardio Blast Home Workout

We celebrated Earth Day earlier this week and hopefully all of our readers were able to spend some time outside to appreciate our beautiful Earth, too!

Need some inspiration to help bring your fitness outdoors? Here's a quick and effective Jump Rope workout you can do outside to burn a ton of calories and get your cardio in. Add this circuit before or after a Pilates Platinum class to really get your heart rate going! You'll reap the extra the benefits for fitting in a cardio burst before your full body strength training!

If you don't have a jump rope you can find one at many local retailers. I love my simple adjustable Nike one (pictured below) that has soft grippy handles. You can shop for this amazing home-gym staple at Target, Walmart, Big5 Sporting Goods, or even Amazon if you have enough patience to wait for it to arrive.
Grab one today to see what you're missing!

Make sure you're following @PilatesPlatinum and @HeatherDorak on Instagram and Facebook for so many fun ways to stay active everyday, not just Earth Day!

15 Minute "Jump Around" Workout Circuit:
Perform the below list of jumps, with a 10 second break in-between each move!

*Basic Jump* 1 minute
(Swing the rope and jump over it rope, and land softly on both feet.)

*Skip Jump* 1 minute
(Swing the rope and jump over it, jump with your right foot first, then your left foot, and continue as if you were skipping in place.)

*Combo Jump* 1 minute
(Jump the Basic Jump for 8 counts, then jump the Skip Jump for 8 counts, and repeat for the full minute.)

*Skip Jump with High Knees* 1 minute
(Just as it says, do the Skip Jump, but raise your knees extra high with each skip, as close to a 90 degree angle as you can.)

*Basic Jump, fast* 2 minutes
(Jump the Basic Jump at a quick pace, maintaining that pace for the full 2 minutes.)

*REST* 1 minute
(Use this time to catch your breath, and get ready for the next endurance move.)

*Basic Jump, fast* 2 minutes
(Jump the Basic Jump at a quick pace, maintaining that pace for the full 2 minutes)

*Rest* 1 minute
(You're on the home stretch, don't give up!)

*Double Jumps* 1 minute
(Jump the Basic Jump, but fit in TWO rope swings for each jump. This is challenging! To modify, alternate between a Basic Jump for 8 counts, and 4 Double Jumps.)

*Basic Jump* 1 minute
(Swing the rope and jump over it rope, and land softly on both feet.)

*Skip Jump* 1 minute
(Swing the rope and jump over it, jump with your right foot first, then your left foot, and continue as if you were skipping in place.)

Don't forget to stretch afterwards!

Trainer Tuesday! A Day in the Life of Hilary Curwen

Welcome Hilary Curwen to Trainer Tuesday! Hilary has been with Pilates Platinum for over a year and is known to give a great workout- both on the proformer AND the bike! Her Pilates and 30/30 Spin/Pilates classes are full of energy and very hands on. You'll especially love her classes if you're into yoga since Hilary tends to incorporate a bit of "yoga flare" into her workouts. Read below to see a day in Hilary's life, then come visit her on the west side and get moving!
A Day in the Life of Hilary Curwen
Pilates and Spin Instructor (Venice Beach and Brentwood Studios)

What are your favorite Pilates moves?
I love core work, Plank Wheel barrel  Catfish..etc (anything on the back)
I also love exercises that are supine on the carriage.. lower abdominals
are my jam! .

What is one of your favorite non-Pilates workouts?
I am a workout machine. I love hot yoga a few times a week; Corepower &
Modo.  Barry's Bootcamp is fabulous once a week to get kicked in the butt,
and of course running.

What’s your exercise routine like for a typical *week
Monday: afternoon yoga & maybe spin class at night
Tuesday: Pilates with jaime, then I teach  30 min spin after..
Wednesday: Classical Pilates in Hollywood or Barry's in Weho.
Thursday: I teach 45 min spin in the a.m, then do Pilates
Friday: Corepower yoga
Saturday: Pilates with Debi & I teach 30 min spin
Sunday: REST

What are some of your favorite healthy foods?
*I love love love mushrooms. Raw, steamed, **sautéed, love it all.  I eat
veggies with almond cheese a lot lately, and make veggie spring rolls with
rice paper and tofu.  I eat pretty "vegan-like."*

What does your workout and eating schedule for a typical day like?
I wake up around 5:30 or 6 am, and the first thing I do is go to the
kitchen.  I have some coconut water and honestly eat whatever is in the
fridge that day.  Today I had sushi from the night before…   I love
smoothies, so I use coconut meat, protein powder and almond milk for a
creamy drink.  I then work for a few hours then do my workout for the day.
I am definitely a morning person so I like to get everything done early.
I am all over LA, so I find places to workout or bring running shoes and do
that in between appointments.  Always keeping clothes in the car has served
me well.   I eat every few hours and I love anything that has dates or nuts
in it.  Recently I have been making my own 'lara bars' for something sweet
in the afternoon.. I work early afternoons and nights then crash early
around 10pm..

"Clap along if you feel like happiness is truth…"

One of my new songs on my running playlist is “Happy” by Pharrell. That song always get’s my morning workout going strong and puts a huge smile on my face!

There’s a great article posted by fabfitfun that I came across today, sharing 15 tips that will put a smile on your face and take you to your happy place!

Here are some of my personal favorites from their list:

Just Dance!
Dancing is something that has always made me happy and I fit in as many classes as I can. But you don’t have to take a class to dance- put on your favorite song, dance around the room for a few and you’ll see how you can boost your mood in those few quick minutes- try it as soon as you wake up and you’ll start your day off right!

Make a Happy List!
I like this idea and I’m going to do it for myself today. It’s so simple: make a list of everything you love. People, places, color, songs…anything! The article says to see how many you can come up with in 10 minutes, carry the list with you all day and reread it every time you want a boost of happy!

Hug It Out!
Squeeze a friend or loved one, they say for at least 6 seconds, and you can’t deny feeling warm and happy!

Eat Chocolate!
Studies show chocolate works to cheer you up by releasing feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin, in the brain. Choose dark chocolate with 75% - 85% cacao and look for raw, organic, or fair trade so that the sweets you’re eating are unprocessed and sustainable as possible. Yum!

Other ways to boost your daily dose of happy include looking at photographs of you and your friends, plying outside like a kid, a quick workout or walk, and even watching youtube videos of puppies!
