2015’s HANGOVER CURE

Maybe you have some self-control with the bubbly, or maybe you don’t. Either way, a green juice can definitely help you on January 1st.

Green juice is an incredible hangover remedy--
way better than any cheeseburger and fries combo out there!

dehydration cure = green juice
electrolyte imbalance cure = green juice
headache cure = green juice
tummy and digestive issues cure = green juice

Try these ingredients below in your hangover green juice to rejuvenate after a long New Year’s celebration:

Kale, Spinach, Parsley, Ginger, Lemon, Grapefruit

Why?
*Because greens like spinach, kale, and parsley are best for liver detoxification. They provide potassium and magnesium to hydrate, and bounce your B levels back up after they’ve been depleted by alcohol consumption.

*Grapefruit and Lemon help restore electrolytes and the Vitamin C helps repair damage cells and stimulate the liver.

*Ginger is one of our favorite anti-inflammatory nutrients. It also helps calm the gut and eliminates headaches.

So whether you’re nursing a headache on the 1st or not, grab something green to get your New Year going great!

Bedtime Munchies: Snack or Skip?

New Year Resolutions are on the table, and so is a commitment to being healthy in 2015. One question our trainers are asked year after year has to do with staying on track- even when hunger hits in the middle of the night.
Here’s the scoop on bedtime munchies:
Which is worse…
eating late at night and going to bed full,  or
ignoring hunger cues and going to bed hungry?

It really is as simple as listening to your body!
Eating a large amount right before bed and going to sleep on a full tummy can be uncomfortable. It can also lead to acid reflux, and can disrupt your digestive system.

On the flip side, hitting the sheets with an empty, rumbling stomach isn’t the answer either. Low blood sugar levels can lead to nighttime awakenings, and depriving yourself isn’t a healthy option.

As with most healthy habits, the goal for nighttime snacking,
aka bedtime munchies, is…
B A L A N C E.

The ideal plan is to eat a balanced meal 2-3 hours before you end your day so that your body can properly digest and prepare for sleep. But if your stomach is growling, and you are truly hungry late at night, the best thing to do is to have a small snack. Try 8 raw almonds, or ½ cup of Greek yogurt. The Protein in both of those options will satisfy your body’s needs throughout the night, and won’t do any harm to your balanced diet. Another favorite is a small portion of baby carrots, or half of an apple, which also helps PM sweet cravings.

So the next time you reach for the cupboards in the dark,
ask yourself if you’re really hungry, and if so, head for the healthy options instead of something you may regret in the daylight.

Figure Eight Beach Side Workout with Heather Dorak for fabfitfun!

In our eyes, summer wouldn’t be complete without a few beach side workouts. Thankfully, Pilates Platinum owner Heather Dorak has got us covered with a custom Pilates Challenge featured on fabfitfun!
Fabfitfun is exactly what it sounds like—a website full of fabulous articles on wellness, entertainment, and style. As a contributing Ambassador for the fabfitfun network, Heather provides readers with at home workout ideas and helpful tips to support a healthy lifestyle.
The best part is that you can do the workouts at home without any fancy equipment. Take this week’s article for example, which has you laying on your back burning your inner thighs with the help of a Magic Circle, aka a Pilates ring. But if you don’t have a ring, Heather explains that the exercises can easily be done with a ball or towel, (or even a stuffed animal) between your legs!

Age is not a number, it's a state of mind!

We've all heard it before, right? Age is not a number, it’s a state of mind. Many of our Pilates Platinum members are proof that there's no age limit for fitness. Some of our strongest clients are proud grandparents who kick major butt on the Megaformer!

Read on to find out some tips that’ll help keep you active year after year.

in your 20s & 30s…
Strength train regularly. Get into a regular routine of weight lifting, resistance exercises, and HIIT workouts. It’s easier for your body to build muscle in your 20s and 30s when higher hormone levels maximize muscle growth. For an amazing, HIIT workout, check out Heather’s latest post on FitnessGalore.com by clicking here!

Stretch. Stretching is such an important part of recovery! Start to work on flexibility by stretching for at least 10 minutes a day, especially after Pilates class, a run, or a hike.

Prevent injuries. Ease into any new training program and make sure to ask for assistance when learning how to do new exercises properly. An added bonus for Pilates Platinum members? Strength training exercises like those done in Pilates help prevent common joint injuries.

in your 40s & 50s…
Stay active. If you’ve been active throughout your life, then you should still be able to enjoy the same physical activities (and Pilates classes!) to a certain extent. And if you haven’t been training, it’s not too late to start building muscle and you can still reap the benefits.

Make time for your workout. Don’t rush through, and listen to your body.

Lighten your load. You can lower the intensity of certain activities by using the bar weight to help balance during Pilates, or using hiking poles during a hike to reduce stress on your knees.

in your 60s & 70s…
Ease up. It’s totally feasible to continue hiking, or power walking, and even taking Pilates Platinum classes through your “golden years.” Staying active is one of the best ways to maintain your individual physical condition as you age, but moving to low-impact activities like swimming and hiking smaller hills will keep you fit while still sparing your joints.

Work on balance. Activities that require balance help maintain your daily coordination and overall physical strength.

A healthy and active lifestyle, especially one that incorporates a regular Pilates practice, is only part of the equation in maintaining health and fitness as you grow older. Fitness is a lifestyle-- fitness is for life!

Keep Cool in Summer's Heat

Summer is (almost) officially here! Now that it’s getting hotter, and warming up earlier in the day, it’s important to adjust your outdoor workouts for the season. In LA, even though we’re used to breaking a sweat under the sun (and under sunscreen and hats!) when the temperatures reach the 90’s and even 100 degrees, there are safety measures to consider. Check out Pilates Platinum’s guide to staying cool in the heat.

-Workout early in the day, or later in the evening. Try your best to avoid working out during peak heat hours! We like to get out early, before 8am even, when temperatures haven’t peaked. If you’re not an early bird, thankfully due to the sun setting later during the summer, try working out after 6pm when the strong sun starts to go down.
Running before or during sunrise has other perks, too!
-Allow your body to adjust to the heat. You might not be able to jump straight to your normal routine during your first outdoor, hot weather workout during a heat wave or high temps. Try to lessen your intensity a bit, or workout for less time, and see how your body reacts. We're not saying you can't tackle those tough Santa Monica stairs (pictured below), but you shouldn't expect to perform at your highest level if you haven't acclimated to the weather yet. Experts say it takes 14 days of training in hot weather, gradually increasing difficulty each workout, to safely reach your full level of intensity.

-Dress appropriately! Your long Lulu leggings may look killer inside at Pilates Platinum, but the extra clothing will make you extra hot if you’re heading outside in high temps. Try sweat-wicking materials, in light colors. We love Nike Dri-Fit! And don’t forget your hat!
(photo from self.com)
-Keep hydrating! The rule of thumb is that in order to avoid dehydration, drink 16-20 ounces of water 2 hours before you workout, and another 8 ounces 30 minutes before you break a sweat. On hot days your body can sweat up to two times as much as normal, so you’ll need to drink plenty of extra fluids to re-hydrate. During yoru workout, try taking a sip every 10 minutes. It also helps to refuel with coconut water, or water with electrolytes, to replenish your body post-workout. We love Trader Joe's coconut water! It may sound like common sense, but we can't stress it enough how important it is to hydrate, especially in the heat.

-Sunscreen! We can’t say it enough. Wear it. Wear a lot of it. Reapply it often. Protect your skin now and thank yourself later. Apply 15 minutes before your workout, and check the labeling to see how long it lasts. One of our favorites for the face and neck is Skin Ceuticals’s Physical FusionUV Defense SPF 50. It’s worth every penny of it’s $34 price tag, and the bottle lasts all summer long.

And, as always, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. No one wants to experience heat exhaustion, or even a heat stroke! So be careful, and whether you’re braving hot weather or not,
“keep cool and Pilates on”!

Change-Up Your Coffee

Coffee, Espresso, Lattes, Tea, Tea-Lattes, Iced or Hot… you name it, I've tried it! But there's a new craze going around in the fitness and health world that I haven't checked out just yet.

Have you heard of Bullet Coffee?!
The name is intimidating, but the results are supposed to be amazing.

What IS "Bullet Coffee"?
Black Coffee mixed with Grass-Fed Butter, and Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil (like Coconut Oil).

Whaaaat??

How to make Bullet Coffee:
1. Brew a cup of black coffee.
2. Add 1 teaspoon of MCT oil (the most popular is Coconut Oil).
3. Add 1 Tablespoon of grass-fed unsalted butter.
4. Mix in a blender, Vitamix, or Bullet, for at least 20 seconds, or until it's creamy and no oil sits on the surface.

This recipe transforms your morning cup of joe into a frothy, creamy, latte-like cup filled with energy! Health and Fitness professionals are claiming that cup of Bullet Coffee before a workout gives them a big boost before they hit the gym.

The idea is that you get your healthy fats in first thing in the morning. Studies show that starting the day with these fasts provides you with a burst of energy, is good for cognitive function, and supports your hormonal system.

What do you think- will you try making Bullet Coffee before your next morning workout? Please send in feedback if you've tried this new trend!

Trainer Tuesday! A Day in the Life of Hilary Curwen

Welcome Hilary Curwen to Trainer Tuesday! Hilary has been with Pilates Platinum for over a year and is known to give a great workout- both on the proformer AND the bike! Her Pilates and 30/30 Spin/Pilates classes are full of energy and very hands on. You'll especially love her classes if you're into yoga since Hilary tends to incorporate a bit of "yoga flare" into her workouts. Read below to see a day in Hilary's life, then come visit her on the west side and get moving!
A Day in the Life of Hilary Curwen
Pilates and Spin Instructor (Venice Beach and Brentwood Studios)

What are your favorite Pilates moves?
I love core work, Plank Wheel barrel  Catfish..etc (anything on the back)
I also love exercises that are supine on the carriage.. lower abdominals
are my jam! .

What is one of your favorite non-Pilates workouts?
I am a workout machine. I love hot yoga a few times a week; Corepower &
Modo.  Barry's Bootcamp is fabulous once a week to get kicked in the butt,
and of course running.

What’s your exercise routine like for a typical *week
Monday: afternoon yoga & maybe spin class at night
Tuesday: Pilates with jaime, then I teach  30 min spin after..
Wednesday: Classical Pilates in Hollywood or Barry's in Weho.
Thursday: I teach 45 min spin in the a.m, then do Pilates
Friday: Corepower yoga
Saturday: Pilates with Debi & I teach 30 min spin
Sunday: REST

What are some of your favorite healthy foods?
*I love love love mushrooms. Raw, steamed, **sautéed, love it all.  I eat
veggies with almond cheese a lot lately, and make veggie spring rolls with
rice paper and tofu.  I eat pretty "vegan-like."*

What does your workout and eating schedule for a typical day like?
I wake up around 5:30 or 6 am, and the first thing I do is go to the
kitchen.  I have some coconut water and honestly eat whatever is in the
fridge that day.  Today I had sushi from the night before…   I love
smoothies, so I use coconut meat, protein powder and almond milk for a
creamy drink.  I then work for a few hours then do my workout for the day.
I am definitely a morning person so I like to get everything done early.
I am all over LA, so I find places to workout or bring running shoes and do
that in between appointments.  Always keeping clothes in the car has served
me well.   I eat every few hours and I love anything that has dates or nuts
in it.  Recently I have been making my own 'lara bars' for something sweet
in the afternoon.. I work early afternoons and nights then crash early
around 10pm..
